I am very excited to be here to share my hand painted tie slab project for the dad in your life. This piece can be customized to fit your home’s colors and the quote can be changed to fit your dad’s personality.
I’ve created a photo tutorial for you to see how I created my bright and fun painted slab. Gather these supplies to create your project:
- Rustic Basswood Planks
- Electronic Cutting System
- Small Hooks
- Clear Coat
Each step to create this hand painted ties slab for dad is pictured below. Here’s how to make it:
Step 1: Paint the edge of your slab. I used acrylic paints in my home’s colors. Use a small brush to work the paint into the bark edge of the Walnut Hollow Rustic Basswood Planks.
Step 2: Create a one-time-use stencil by cutting images into cardstock using an electronic cutting system. If you do not have an electronic cutter, find a pattern you like, trace it onto paper, and then cut it out to create the stencil. Create a second stencil with lettering for a quote or sentiment to place on the wood later in this project.
Step 3: Time to paint! Hold the stencil in place with your hand and paint the tie shape. Allow the stenciled image to dry completely, then move the stencil over to repeat the pattern down the entire length of the wood. Again, allow the paint to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Step 4: Hold the quote stencil in place with your hand or a piece of painter’s tape. To make the lettering pop off the background, choose a contrasting color of paint. I chose black paint for this project so that the words would stand out against the white ties and light wood background. Paint through the stencil and allow to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Step 5: Seal the project with a spray clear coat or with a decoupage medium like Decoupage from DecoArt.
Step 6: Install a hook in between every other tie, at the bottom of the plank. Drill pilot holes if needed.
Step 7: Hang it up. Get dad a new tie to go with it and ta da! Father’s Day Gift DONE.
It was so great to share this project with you all.
