Hey Walnut Hollow fans, Katie here! Today I wanted to show you how I turned a Triangle Shelf into a modern planter. This Triangle Shelf is one of Walnut Hollow’s newest releases and I love the geometric look!
I also love a good piece of porch decor! I wanted this piece to be a bit more modern, so I gave it a fun two-toned color blocked look. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, Color Blocking means to give something a section of a contrasting color, usually bright and solid. Here’s how:
Supplies:
- Triangle Shelf
- Acrylic Paint
- 1″ Paint Brush
- Painter’s Tape or Washi Tape
- Screw Hook
- Mason Jar
- Twine
- Gold Foil and Adhesive
- Succulents and Potting Soil
Step one: Start by taping off the top 4″ of the triangle shelf. You can adjust this measurement, depending on how much of the triangle you want to be color blocked.
I gave it two coats, to make the the red paint was nice and solid.
Step two: Screw a hook into the top corner of your triangle. You can use a pair of pliers to make it easier to screw such a small hook into the tight corner of the shelf.
Step three: I planned on putting this little planter on my front porch, so I used white acrylic paint to letter on a little “welcome” message.
I recommend writing it out with a pencil first, and then going back over it with paint.
Step four: Tie twine around a small mason jar, and hang it from the screw hook.
To give it a modern/glam look, I also added a bit of gold foil to the jar. I brushed some of Tombow’s MONO Multi Liquid Glue around the top edge of the jar, and once it was dry, applied transfer foil over top.
Step five: Next, add plants! I added a layer of small rocks to the very bottom, to help with draining the soil, and then a few inches of potting soil and then finally I planted a variety of sedum.
I’m also thinking this would be such a cute welcome sign for a Summer wedding or party! It is super easy to customize, simply by changing up the colors.
