DIY Wood Burned Mandalas

 

Hello everyone, It’s Katie here and I have a fun DIY to share with you inspired by Mandalas, Wood Burning and Pointillism! I combined those 3 different art forms onto a Basswood round to create a unique piece of art! Here’s how:

Supplies:

• Basswood Country Rounds – Thick 7″-9″
• Creative Versa-Tool
• DecoArt Media Paints
• Tombow Sand Eraser
• Small Paintbrush
• Paint Palette Paper
• Polargraph Paper
• Transfer Paper
• Pencil

Step one: Design your mandalas! Mandalas usually have repeating elements, and I’ve found that the easiest way to draw them is to use a piece of polargraph paper. I did a quick google for printable polargraphs and easily found some to print out.

Step two: Place a piece of transfer paper on top of your Basswood Round, place the mandala design on top, and then trace over top of your lines again with a pencil to transfer the design onto the wood.

I only drew my half of my mandala design, and simply rotated the design to transfer the second half.

Step three: Wood burn your design! Wood burning can be a little time consuming, but it’s always worth it in the end to see that beautiful design burned into your basswood round!

I like using the Flow Point as my tip whenever I’m burning something with a lot of curves like this.

Step four: Use a sand eraser to remove any remaining pencil lines showing.

Step five: Squirt a small amount of paint onto a palette and use a fine paintbrush to paint dots around your design.

Pointillism is a technique of painting in which small dots of paint are applied in patterns to form an image. Continue adding dots around and around until you fill up the wood.

I created a second round, only this time I did half a mandala and decided it looked like a flower, so I also chose to burn on the word “bloom”.
