Make a Faux Apothecary Cabinet with Card keeper boxes

I really love vintage and antique things, especially cabinets. My favorites are the old Apothecary cabinets, and card catalogs. Finding them is difficult. And when you can find them they are very expensive.  Whenever I can, I like to recreate those looks on my own for a lot less money.  You would never guess that I made this fun Faux Apothecary Cabinet using Walnut Hollow Card Keeper boxes! It makes the perfect little storage cabinet for office or craft supplies.

Faux Apothecary Cabinet made from WH Card Keeper Boxes

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own Faux Apothecary Cabinet:

  • Walnut Hollow Card Keeper Boxes (6)
  • Wood Glue
  • Sandpaper
  • Drawer pulls (4) for the Feet
  • Label Frame cabinet pulls (6)
  • Screw driver
  • Wood Stain
  • Soft Cloth
  • Gloves
  • Spring Clamps

Walnut Hollow Card Keeper Boxes (6)

Step One:

You will need 6 Walnut Hollow Card Keeper Boxes.  Each box has it’s own lid that slides off. Arrange all 6 boxes together to form the cabinet in rows of 2 with their lids sliding out.

Step Two:

Use wood glue to secure your boxes together.  First in pairs of two, and then in rows.

Glue the card keeper boxes together and use clamps to secure

Step three:

Secure with clamps and let dry overnight.

Step four:

Sand off any glue that may have leaked between the cracks and any rough spots on the boxes.

Step five:

Stain the cabinet with the wood stain. I used a Dark Walnut color.  Use gloves, and a soft clean cloth to rub the stain into the wood evenly.  Let dry.

Step six:

Glue the drawer knobs to the bottom of your cabinet to act as feet.

Step Seven:

Attach the label frame drawer pulls to the lids of the Card Keeper Boxes.

Attach the hardware to the lids of the Card keeper boxes.

When people see my new cabinet they can’t believe that it used to be six Card Keeper Boxes!

Craft storage Faux Apothecary Cabinet

It fits my fat quarter fabric collection wonderfully.  Those delightful happy little scraps of fabric are just the perfect size for each little cubby to hold 10-12 pieces.

The lids of the boxes slide out away from the cabinet instead of swinging or pulling open which gives it a unique character all it’s own.

Kelli @ Ks Craft Shack

After studying Culinary Arts in Portland Oregon, Kelli went back home to the sunny South West where she decided she wanted to do different kinds of Art. This busy mom of three spends all of her available free time creating in her Craft Shack “she shed” where she can be found burning wood, repurposing old stuff, playing with clay, and painting just about anything she can get her hands on.

Spring Coloring Book Cupcake Stand

I got to combine three of my favorite things in this project today. It’s been so much fun! I love Spring and all of the beautiful flowers it brings. I also really love the adult coloring book trend, and around here cupcakes are a winning favorite every time. This Spring Coloring Book Cupcake Stand was so much fun to make using Walnut Hollow Chippendale plates and the inspiration from some very beautiful Adorn-it Adult Coloring books.  You can easily take the Coloring book trend to the next level and color on these beautiful wooden plates instead of just on the paper!

Supplies needed to make your own Spring Coloring Book Cupcake Stand:

Step one:

Choose your favorite coloring book page from the book.

Trace the design you picked onto the plates using graphite tracing paper.

I broke the design up between the two plates, spacing the flowers out until I was happy with their placement.

Step Two:

Using your Creative Versa-Tool® burn the design into the wood, following your traced  lines.

Step Three:

Paint your flower design using the acrylic craft paint just like you would if you were coloring. Use a small brush, and whatever colors you wish. I made mine bright and happy, like Spring! The wood burned lines in the plates act like a guide, it’s very easy to paint over a wood burned picture.

I left the rest of the plate in it’s natural wood state.

Step Four:

Seal your plate.  Most finishes are safe to use on kitchen items as long as they are allowed to fully cure before use.   Choose the one you are most comfortable working with.  I used a simple water based polycrylic to seal the wood.

Apply two coats and allow to dry for 24 hours.

Step five:

Glue your candlestick between the plates. I used E6000 glue. Attach the bottom of the candlestick to the middle of the bottom plate, and the top of the candlestick to the underside middle of the top plate.

Allow the glue to dry completely.

Fill your bright and happy cupcake stand with your yummy cupcakes and display proudly! The stand comfortably holds 10-16 standard size cupcakes.  I had fun using the coloring book page to also make colored chocolate toppers for my cupcakes. Aren’t they so cute on my Spring Coloring Book Cupcake Stand?
