Make a beautiful Ocean Waves inspired Serving Board

Creating a serving board inspired by the Ocean Waves is easier than you might think.  The gorgeous new Walnut Hollow Serving Boards are a beautiful canvas for these amazing ocean waves.  With just a small amount of resin (you only need 2 ounces), some craft paint, and a heat gun you can create a magical ocean scene of your own to wow your guests.

Here’s what you’ll need to create your own Ocean Waves Serving Board:

  • Walnut Hollow Serving Board 
  • Epoxy Resin
  • Acrylic Craft Paints in Shades of Blue and White
  • Heat Gun (Or Hair Dryer)
  • Disposable measuring cups
  • Wooden Stir Sticks
  • Gloves

Step one:

Always wear gloves and protect your work surface when working with Resin Epoxy.

Measure and pour the two-part epoxy. You only need 2 ounces of epoxy for this project.  It’s very important to follow the brand-specific instructions on the packaging as each brand is just slightly different.  The epoxy I am using requires equal parts of the resin and the hardener.  Stir the parts to combine for the specified length of time on the packaging.

Pour the epoxy into a second container and stir again if required by the type of resin you are using.

Step two:

Separate your resin out into smaller amounts.  I used three shades of Blue and a White.  Keep a small amount of clear epoxy without any tinting.

Set the clear epoxy aside.  Add a drop of paint or two to each smaller cup of epoxy.  Mix thoroughly.

Step three:

Place several empty cups on your covered work surface, and set the serving board on top of the cups.  This allows the excess epoxy to drip off of the sides rather than pooling around your serving board.

Step four:

Starting at one edge of the serving board, pour each of the blue colors in straight lines.  Start with the darkest blue shade on the outside edge. Adding a thin stripe of untinted epoxy between each color stripe helps with blending.

Pour small lines of white along with your colored stripes.  Vary and break the lines throughout.

Step five:

Using your heat gun (or hairdryer) gently blow the epoxy to move it.  The warm air will make the epoxy move a little bit better.  Use the air to push some of the darker blues into the lighter blues, and to disperse your white.  The white, when it blends, will look like the tips of waves.  Don’t overdo this step or all of your colors will just blend together into one blue blob.  That will look beautiful too, but it won’t look like the Ocean.

Step six:

Allow the excess epoxy to run off and drip for approximately 30 minutes.   Use the side of a craft stick to scrape underneath the edge of your serving board to remove any drips that have formed and not dropped off.

Allow your Ocean Waves Serving Board to cure for at least 24 hours.   Once the resin has hardened and cured,  you can use or display your beautiful new serving board.  Adding a coat of food-safe mineral oil to your serving board brings out the gorgeous wood grain even more, which compliments your lovely ocean waves so beautifully.

Mini Crate Rotating Craft Storage

You can make this super cute and functional rotating craft supply storage crate with just a few supplies.  It’s an easy way to get a lot of craft supplies stored in a unit that has just a 12″x12″ footprint! These Walnut Hollow Mini Crates and a 12×12 wood panel are perfect for the project.  I only stacked my rotating tower two levels high, but you could go several levels higher I think, creating even more space!

Here’s what you’ll need:

Step one:

First, you need to attach your lazy susan swivel plate to the center of the smooth side of the 12×12 wood panel.   To do this, I glued the plate to the panel.  You could use hardware to do this as well, however, the wood panel is quite thin, and I didn’t want screws poking up through the other side.  A good quality multi-surface glue that is rated for both metal and wood will attach the plate just fine.   *Optional: Glue felt or cork to the bottom of your swivel plate to keep the metal plate from scratching your surfaces!

Step two:

Glue four crates together to form a square configuration.  The best way to see how to arrange them is to see the picture included. Lay the crates on their sides with the openings facing out, and glue the handle sides together to the bases. Use wood glue, and clamp the crates in place until they dry.  Repeat this with as many levels as you want for your rotating storage.

Step three:

Paint or stain the pieces of the storage unit.  I used simple white spray paint to paint the wood panel and the crates.  You could stain them, leave them natural, or paint them bright colors if you prefer! Whatever matches your space.  Customize them to be perfect just for you!   Whichever you choose, allow the crates to dry completely before moving on.

Step four:

Glue the parts together.   Add a line of glue around the frame of the wood panel.  Note that the smooth side of the panel with the swivel base is face down.  Stack your first level of crates on the wood panel base.  Place something heavy on them while the wood glue dries.  Repeat with each additional level you wish to stack.  I varied the configuration of the crates so that the solid sides didn’t line up.

Step five:

Fill up your new craft storage!  Acrylic paint bottles fit perfectly in the cubbies.  As do pint size mason jars!

Fat quarters sit nicely, as well as thread, small wood slices, and my glue gun! So many possibilities! The center hole in the middle of the crates was great for paintbrush storage. *Tip: If your tower is more than 1 level high, you will need to place something in the bottom of the hole to keep the paintbrushes from falling through too far. I used an empty water bottle turned upside down and pushed into the hole before placing the paint brushes in.
