I thought it would be fun to create a pair of projects instead of just one! Walnut Hollow was kind enough to send me a Hinged Sign as well as a Card Box. The Card Box is sized to hold Artist Trading Cards or two decks of playing cards. The Hinged Sign can go anywhere – this one will be a gift for a friend’s mom.
I have included instructions and a supply list so these projects can be duplicated precisely as shown, but first I want to share some “design strategies” so that they can be customized to suit any décor and occasion.
DESIGN STRATEGIES:
*Choose a sheet of black outline peel-offs with images that are contained in a circle, oval or label shape. (In addition to the Dragonfly Ladies, shown, Elizabeth Craft Designs also has roses, daisies, fashion dolls, and more.)
*For the Hinged Sign project, find a quote or poem that illustrates the theme of the peel-offs. (Quotes are easy to search online.)
*Pick a palette. (I colored the peel-offs first and then chose the rest of the colors – paint, alcohol inks and Shimmer Sheetz.)
*Choose some cutting dies or punches with shapes that coordinate with the peel-offs and quote.
*Add just a few formally-placed embellishments (like on the box) or go over-the-top (like the Hinged Sign).
*Match the adhesive to the surfaces you want to adhere. (Tombow Xtreme High Performance Adhesive, MONO Multi Liquid Glue, and Power Tabs did the job!)
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Place black outline peel-offs onto heavy white cardstock and color with pens in colors of choice.
2. Base coat the Hinged Sign and/or Card Box (front and back/inside and out). Using one or more additional colors, streak and distress the surface for a more rustic look.
3. For flowers and berry branches, alter Fire Opal Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz with alcohol inks in colors listed or colors you prefer. Die cut flowers and berry branches. (*You will need a metal adapter plate to die cut Shimmer Sheetz – Watch the Elizabeth Craft Designs YouTube video tutorial to view this technique.)
4. Print the quote or poem onto the same heavy white cardstock used in Step 1. Trim a rectangle measuring approximately 3” x 4.5” so the quote will fit on the Hinged Sign.
5. Hand cut or die cut one Amethyst Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz circle for each already-colored peel-off (1/2” larger than peel-off). Cut a piece of the same Shimmer Sheetz into a rectangle to border the quote. Emboss these four pieces with Spring Leaves embossing folder. Alter with Espresso alcohol ink or in whatever color(s) you prefer. Lightly sand the embossed pieces to reveal some of the silver core of the Shimmer Sheetz.
6. Using Tombow Xtreme, attach the cardstock with the quote to the Shimmer Sheetz rectangle. Using Power Tabs, attach the colored peel-offs to the Shimmer Sheetz circles. Using Tombow Extreme, attach all of these to the painted Hinged Sign and/or the Card Box.
7. Using Tombow Power Tabs, attach the heart peel-offs, Shimmer Sheetz flowers and berry branches as shown or as you prefer. Bend petals upward for dimension, adhere only the center of each flower.
TIP: Use non-stick scissors to cut Power Tabs into pieces BEFORE removing them from the backing wherever you need a small piece rather than an entire square (for example: to adhere the center of the flowers and the end of each berry branch)
8. Using MONO Multi Liquid Glue, adhere a pearl or gem to the center of each flower. Arrange additional pearls and gems around the circle on the Card Box and in a variety of places on the Hinged Sign.

For my Blog Hop Project I decided to come up with a solution to the hundreds of photos that I have printed but don’t do anything with each year. I love the idea of scrap booking but I never seem to get around to it! I have my photos printed with the intention of doing something with them but they always end up sitting in the box that they came in. It is always nice to look through those boxes. If I had a decorative way to organize these photos by year it would be a lot easier to be proud to store them on my bookshelf!
This is what I came up with:
It was difficult to choose which stencil to use. Stencil Girl has such an AMAZING selection of unique stencils. I finally decided to go with the Chevron stencil because it went with my living room decor.
I started with a Walnut Hollow Classic Box. It is made of basswood and is the perfect size for standard 4″x6″ photos. The first thing that I did to prepare my box was to sand it.
I used a 1″ foam brush to apply the wood sealer. I put on one coat of sealer on the entire box then let the box dry for about 20 minutes. When the box was dry I lightly sanded it again.
I used painters tape to tape off the outside edge of the box so that I could paint the inside of the box and not worry about going over the edge and getting paint on the outside. I used Americana Bahama Blue acrylic paint on the inside.
After the Bahama Blue inside dried I took off the tape and put new tape on the inside edge of the box to protect it while I painted the outside. I mixed 1 part Americana Mississippi Mud acrylic paint with 1 part Americana Staining and Antiquing Medium and used a wide brush to apply the mixture to the outside of the box.
When the paint was dry I lightly sanded the corners and edges of the box to “antique” it a little bit more.
I used Americana Khaki Tan Acrylic Paint to stencil the first Chevron. I firmly held down the stencil with my left hand and used a stencil brush to stipple in the stencil with my right hand.
I used the same technique on the other 2 chevrons but I used the Bahama Blue Acrylic Paint on the middle pattern.
I added another chevron the the side of my box with Americana Tangelo Orange Acrylic Paint.
I used Walnut Hollow 1.5″ numbers to add the year to the box.

I feel like I should stand in front of a room and say, “Hi, I am Chris Wallace and I love boxes!” Not that I have a problem or anything, but I really do love boxes. I was beginning to write this blog and I started to name it “One of my favorite boxes”, but then I like so many of our boxes, I realized that I needed to confess!
This particular box really is one of my favorites because the artwork is so simple. The box itself is called a Roomy Box. http://www.walnuthollow.com/store/wood-surfaces/boxes/items/roomy-box/1253op/ The lid is hinged to the box bottom. It’s made out of basswood, so it’s great for wood burning and wood carving.
I wanted a very simple design, so I stained the wood with DecoArt® (http://www.decoart.com/) Americana® Burnt Umber mixed with Antiquing and Staining Medium. Brush on the stain with a large flat brush and wipe off the excess with a paper towel. I stained the entire box – inside and out.
While the stain was drying, I cut my paper. Any type of decorative paper will work. I cut the strips for the bottom of the box 1 5/8” wide, 4 ¾” long for the sides and 7 ¾” long for the front. The top piece was cut with a Spellbinders die, Lattice Rectangles,http://www.spellbinderspaperarts.com/products/p-69-lattice-rectangles.aspx. Finished, the paper that was die cut is 4 1/8” x 5 1/8”.
I used medium grade sandpaper to sand all the edges of the stained box. Wipe the box with a damp paper towel to remove all the dust. I used Tombow®( http://tombowusa.com/craft/adhesives/mono-aqua-liquid-glue.html) MONO Aqua Liquid Glue to adhere the paper to the box.
Just add a knob by gluing onto the lid, or drill a hole and attach with a screw. Easy, simple, but really pretty!
Here are a few other ideas made with the Roomy Box. I like them all – the carved one is really easy too, even if you haven’t carved before. Would you like to learn how to make it? Let me know sometime and I’ll write a blog about it.
