Start saving corks from wine bottles now! They are fun to use just as they are, or, in this case, I cut them down the center so I could adhere the flat side to each long edge of a Basswood Country Plank®. These Rustic Cork Trays would be perfect to use as a serving tray, tabletop display or to actually use for a buffet table filled with food.
I used a Basswood Country Plank, Medium for my project. It measures approximately 13” long and 10” or so wide. The Basswood Country Planks come in a variety of sizes, so choose the best for your project.
To stencil the design down the center of the Plank, use a pencil and ruler to mark the center and tape the stencil template in place. I used a DCWV 12” x 12” Stencil. It included a variety of stencil designs and I liked the arrows. I used a soft sponge to stencil arrows with DecoArt® Americana® Burnt Orange and Slate Grey. Notice that the Burnt Orange arrows go in one direction while the Slate Grey arrows go in the opposite direction.
The trick to successful stenciling is to use very little paint on the sponge. It’s always best to apply two light coats of paint rather than one heavy coat that might “leak” under the stencil surface.
Now for cutting the corks in half – following the manufacturer’s instructions on the outside and inside of the Creative Versa-Tool® packaging, tape the Tool Stand to your work surface. Use pliers to attach the Hot Knife Point in the tool and place the tool on the stand. Plug into an electric outlet and dial the Versa-Temp control to the Orange Zone. Let heat for 4-5 minutes.
Use the Hot Knife Point to slice down the center of each cork to cut it into2 sections. For a strong adhesion between the cork and Plank surface, use Tombow® MONO Multi Liquid Glue. It’s the best!
For a protective finish on the wood surface, it’s a good idea to varnish the Planks well with either 2-3 coats of spray or brush-on varnish.
If you plan to place food on the surface of the Plank, use paper doilies or some type of covering so the food doesn’t stain the wood.

This centerpiece is a holder for favors you can give your guests or visitors when they are in your home for the Christmas Holidays – you could also create another, more generic, one that could be used throughout the year.
I began the project with 3 Mini Crates and 6 small Ball® jars. Using a large flat brush, paint the slat sides of each Crate with DecoArt® Americana® acrylic Holly Green and the ends with Tuscan Red. I used 2 coats of each color, sanding lightly between coats with fine sandpaper. Let dry thoroughly.
Use a piece of chalk to write the words “Joy to the World” on the ends of the Crates. Use a medium round brush with DecoArt® Americana® Warm White to paint the worlds.
Use a thin liner brush to paint thin lines to make snowflakes on the side slats. Add dots to the snowflakes and all over the Crate using the wood end of the brush handle.
When the Crates are thoroughly dry, use a large flat brush to paint 2 coats of Americana® Matte Varnish for a protective finish. Let dry.
Attach chalkboard stickers to each jar. Use a Bistro Chalk Marker to write your guest’s names on the labels and fill the jars with goodies. Tie a knot with red tulle at the top of each jar.
Using 3 types of ¼” ribbon (I used red, green and gold), tie the Crates together in 4 places. Place 2 jars in each crate.
Send the jars home with your guests or visitors as favors! Enjoy your Holidays with family and friends.

Thanksgiving is just about a month away and it’s time to think about new decorations for your home – maybe something that can change each year, if you like. Actually, you could leave this up all year round.
The Thankful Pallet, 14″ x 24″, is painted with chalkboard paint, so you can erase the words each year and write different things you are thankful for on each slat.
To make it easier to create, I sprayed the entire Rustic Pallet with Krylon® Chalkboard Paint, Black. Once it was dry, I used a large flat brush to paint the top slat only with Eggplant DecoArt® Americana®Multi-Surface Satin™. Once dry, I used the large flat brush to paint Clear DecoArt® Americana® Chalkboard Paint on the top of the Eggplant so it could be used like a chalkboard. Note: Always follow the manufacturers directions on the bottle so you know how long to wait between coats.
I used Marvy® Bistro Chalk Markers for all the lettering.
To add a pop of color to the Pallet, paint cardstock tags with DecoArt® Americana Hauser Light Green and clothespins with Burnt Orange. Use a black marker pen to add other people or things for which you are Thankful. Add the tags here and there and secure them with a clothespin.
To hang the Pallet, attach a couple of metal screw eyes on the backside of the Pallet. Cut the green satin ribbon into (2) 24” lengths. Add ribbon on each side through the screw eyes and tie together at the top center of the Pallet.

Thanks for inviting me to be part of the Walnut Hollow/Quietfire Design Blog Hop! I made a Mixed Media Hinged Sign, a gift for a friend who loves flowers and butterflies and anything that’s shabby-chic. It’s very much a girly-girl project, that’s for sure.
The collage layers include pages from cast-off books. I stamped on paint-smudged newsprint to give the phrases the same vintage look as the background. And I altered the Black Flower Branch Peel-offs with Gold Metallic and Currant inks to create the feel of weathered metal.
I added Glitter Flowers for a bit of extra sparkle. Stop at Step 8 if you like a more muted effect.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Base coat exterior of Hinged Sign with Snow (Titanium) White. Mix Royal Purple and Traditional Raw Umber. Use this mix to distress the edges of the exterior of the Hinged Sign and to paint the interior.
2. Using white paint and a dry brush, paint over several pages from cast-off books, including some that have pictures of flowers. Allow text and images to show through.
3. Cut one piece of painted paper to fit the front of the sign. Glue it in place. Tear other pieces so they are about a half-inch larger than the stamps; glue the torn pieces in place.
4. Use Jet Black ink to stamp phrases on paint-smudged newsprint. Tear around the stamped phrases, and glue them in place on top of the larger torn pieces from Step 3.
5. Use the Ink Applicator Tool to apply Gold Metallic Mixatives to the sheet of Black Flower Branch Peel-offs, creating a mottled effect. Add Currant Alcohol Ink without cleaning the Applicator Tool. Peel-offs will take on the look of weathered metal.
6. Arrange Flower Branch Peel-offs, including some of the butterflies and dots. Refer to the photos for placement. Trim the Peel-offs at the sides of the Sign.
7. Use Power Tags to secure two “Trinkets” (Bloom and Butterflies).
8. If you like the Hinged Sign as it is, stop now.
9. For more sparkle add a Glitter Flower to each of the flowers on the Flower Branch Peel-offs! TIP: The sheet of Glitter Flowers has many styles and sizes. Use the two SMALLEST 5-petal flowers. They are the perfect fit for the flowers in the Flower Branch Peel-offs.

I was so excited when this Rustic Tree became part of our Rustic Pallet Program! I thought of many ways to use it, but decided that I’d better create one for the upcoming Holiday Season before moving onto other ideas that are a little less traditional. On Facebook the other day, I was reminded that there are only 16 weeks until Christmas. Yikes! Time to get things started……….
Paint the trunk of the Tree with a large flat brush and a wash of color – I used DecoArt® Americana® Dark Chocolate with water. Paint the green branches with DecoArt® Americana® Hauser Green.
After the branches are dry, use a sanding block or an electric hand sander to sand back the paint on the edges and other places on each slat to be antiqued later.
Antique each slat with a mixture of Americana® Staining/Antiquing Medium™ and Dark Chocolate. Brush the mixture onto each branch and wipe off the excess with a soft cloth.
Your plain Tree should look like this.
Take the clothespins apart. Use a medium flat brush to paint all sides of each clothespin with Americana® Décor™ Chalky Finish Rouge. Once dry, put the clothespins back together – I find using a pair a needle nose pliers helpful for this step.
Start clipping the Christmas Cards that you and your family receive as they arrive so you can enjoy them throughout the Season!

I thought it would be fun to create a pair of projects instead of just one! Walnut Hollow was kind enough to send me a Hinged Sign as well as a Card Box. The Card Box is sized to hold Artist Trading Cards or two decks of playing cards. The Hinged Sign can go anywhere – this one will be a gift for a friend’s mom.
I have included instructions and a supply list so these projects can be duplicated precisely as shown, but first I want to share some “design strategies” so that they can be customized to suit any décor and occasion.
DESIGN STRATEGIES:
*Choose a sheet of black outline peel-offs with images that are contained in a circle, oval or label shape. (In addition to the Dragonfly Ladies, shown, Elizabeth Craft Designs also has roses, daisies, fashion dolls, and more.)
*For the Hinged Sign project, find a quote or poem that illustrates the theme of the peel-offs. (Quotes are easy to search online.)
*Pick a palette. (I colored the peel-offs first and then chose the rest of the colors – paint, alcohol inks and Shimmer Sheetz.)
*Choose some cutting dies or punches with shapes that coordinate with the peel-offs and quote.
*Add just a few formally-placed embellishments (like on the box) or go over-the-top (like the Hinged Sign).
*Match the adhesive to the surfaces you want to adhere. (Tombow Xtreme High Performance Adhesive, MONO Multi Liquid Glue, and Power Tabs did the job!)
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Place black outline peel-offs onto heavy white cardstock and color with pens in colors of choice.
2. Base coat the Hinged Sign and/or Card Box (front and back/inside and out). Using one or more additional colors, streak and distress the surface for a more rustic look.
3. For flowers and berry branches, alter Fire Opal Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz with alcohol inks in colors listed or colors you prefer. Die cut flowers and berry branches. (*You will need a metal adapter plate to die cut Shimmer Sheetz – Watch the Elizabeth Craft Designs YouTube video tutorial to view this technique.)
4. Print the quote or poem onto the same heavy white cardstock used in Step 1. Trim a rectangle measuring approximately 3” x 4.5” so the quote will fit on the Hinged Sign.
5. Hand cut or die cut one Amethyst Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz circle for each already-colored peel-off (1/2” larger than peel-off). Cut a piece of the same Shimmer Sheetz into a rectangle to border the quote. Emboss these four pieces with Spring Leaves embossing folder. Alter with Espresso alcohol ink or in whatever color(s) you prefer. Lightly sand the embossed pieces to reveal some of the silver core of the Shimmer Sheetz.
6. Using Tombow Xtreme, attach the cardstock with the quote to the Shimmer Sheetz rectangle. Using Power Tabs, attach the colored peel-offs to the Shimmer Sheetz circles. Using Tombow Extreme, attach all of these to the painted Hinged Sign and/or the Card Box.
7. Using Tombow Power Tabs, attach the heart peel-offs, Shimmer Sheetz flowers and berry branches as shown or as you prefer. Bend petals upward for dimension, adhere only the center of each flower.
TIP: Use non-stick scissors to cut Power Tabs into pieces BEFORE removing them from the backing wherever you need a small piece rather than an entire square (for example: to adhere the center of the flowers and the end of each berry branch)
8. Using MONO Multi Liquid Glue, adhere a pearl or gem to the center of each flower. Arrange additional pearls and gems around the circle on the Card Box and in a variety of places on the Hinged Sign.

These masculine projects will be fun to use anytime, especially when entertaining for a sports event. The Graphic 45® papers and accessories used come with any type of sports you want for a focus or just mix it up as I did.
I’ve gotten “hooked” on DecoArt® Americana® Décor™, Chalky Finish. The more I use them, the more projects I think of where I will need them! You’ll get hooked too – they are so easy to use with fabulous results. You can use them alone, or layer them as I did. Each piece of wood uses the same basic technique. The Mini Crate was basecoated with Rouge using a large flat brush. After it dried, a layer of Heritage was added over the Rouge. I did the same thing with one of the Rectangular Trays.
The other Rectangular Tray was layered with Rough, Heirloom, then New Life.
Let all the paint thoroughly dry and sand back the top paint layer to reveal what is under. Sometimes I go all the way down to the raw wood. You can use a piece of sand paper, a sanding block or I like to use an electric sander. Make sure you sand well on the edges of each piece as well as in other more flat areas.
After wiping the wood with a paper towel to remove the remaining dust, use a brush or soft cloth to apply the Crème Wax. I used Deep Brown. Use a small brush to get into the hard-to-reach areas. Wipe off the excess wax. The wax stains areas that are raw wood and antiques the painted areas. When everything is dry, buff the entire piece with a clean soft cloth. I love the feel of the smooth finish the wax gives and you can hear the squeaky waxy finish on the surface if you rub hard with just your fingers. From new to a wonderful vintage look in just a short time!
Now for the next fun part. I’m also hooked in Graphic 45® papers and accessories. The look of the Good Ol’ Sport program was perfect for this idea. Using a Fiskars® trimmer, I cut the papers, trading cards and postcards to fit inside the Trays.
I’m hooked on anything Tombow®! The new Xtreme Adhesive is incredible. I used it to adhere everything to the bottom of each Tray. It’s so strong that I can be sure that anything I use Xtreme on will stay in place.
I used a “Go Team” stamp in the set of Good Ol’ Sport Cling Stamps. Using Clearsnap’s Black Surfacez ink pad assures that the image will be permanent on the Crate. I added a few Good Ol’ Sport Cardstock Stckers to the Crate also.
Add a piece of plexiglass as a final touch to protect the papers. You’ll feel comfortable using the Trays for serving anything. You can get the plexiglass from a hardware store and they will cut it to fit. Just add a little starter hole for the screws and place one in each corner – it’s ready to use.
Kinda sounds like I’m “hooked”! Just on my favorite products………..can’t get enough of Tombow®, DecoArt® or Graphic 45®. Each is a fabulous company with fabulous products. Walnut Hollow enjoys all of them as partners. I don’t think I have a problem, do I?
