A clock is a great gift. A HANDMADE clock is an even better gift (especially for those people in your life who never seem to make it anywhere on time.) That was my thought process when trying to decide what to create for Handmade Holiday. I am a huge fan of ethnic looking patterns and Moroccan inspired motifs so when I saw a line of product that used this style on the Sizzix website, I knew I wanted to create a trendy clock with one of our Modern Plaques.
I chose the Walnut Hollow Medallion Modern Plaque as my clock surface. I love all of the Modern Plaque shapes, but this one stuck out to me for as a great shape for a clock.
First I had to find the center of the plaque. Once I was happy with the point I had determined as the center, I drilled a hole through the plaque using a ¾ inch drill bit. I then sanded the surface to prepare it for painting.
I found these amazing Moroccan inspired buttons, embellishments and chipboard by Sizzix. I immediately knew I wanted to use them as numbers on my clock. The patterns and motifs complemented the Medallion Plaque’s shape perfectly.
To prepare my clock surface I spray painted it gold with Krylon Metallic Spray Paint.
I let it dry then added a rich blue color that I mixed together to the face of the clock. There is a faint line on the edge of the plaque that I used as a guideline for my paint brush.
I picked out the buttons and embellishments that I wanted to use as numbers. The buttons had rings on the back that I had to pull out. I used a pair of pliers to wiggle them out of the back. It was a simple process.
I used a Sizzix 4″ Circle Die and the Sizzix Big Shot to cut through the Chipboard.
I glued the circle to the middle of the clock and used scissors to poke a hole in the center. I used the scissors to shape a hole in the chipboard that was 3/4″ so that it sat right above the hole that was drilled into the wood.
To adhere the “numbers” to the wood I used Tombow Power Tabs. I decided where each button and embellishment should go and pushed them into place.
I then added the Walnut Hollow Clock Movements and hands according the the manufacturers directions which can be found on the back of the package.
Clocks are so much fun to make- and even more fun to give as gifts! If you enter to win our prize package by commenting on our blog hop posts and win the prize you will have all of the Walnut Hollow product necessary to make a clock of your own!
