Walnut Hollow Crafts | Do What Makes You Happy

IMG_2217

This mixed media project was perfect for Suzanne Cannon’s wonderful calligraphy sentiment stamp set, Twirl & Enjoy. I’m so delighted that she makes them for us to use so we can share these words over and over again! And for many of us, we get to “do what makes us happy” while we are using the stamps. Doesn’t get much better than that.

I began this project by using a large flat brush to basecoat the Walnut Hollow Basswood Canvas with DecoArt® Americana® Hauser Light Green. I wanted a little sparkle on the surface, so I added DecoArt® StarLite Varnish, just to the top of the Canvas. The varnish is great because it adds just a touch of glitter.

While everything was drying, I cut (3) 1 ½” strips of ivory cardstock and inked, stamped and used my sewing machine to attach several thinner strips of colored cardstock to the ivory paper. For the ink pads, I used Clearsnap® Tutti-Frutti Queue which includes 6 colors – perfect for this project.

After die cutting scallop circles from Spellbinders®, I used Clearsnap® ColorBox® Midnight ink pad to stamp all of the sentiments – “do what makes you happy” and other stamps from Quietfire Design – “My friend” and “Each of us has a song to sing” – 2 of my other favorite stamps. (I actually have lots of favorite Quietfire Design stamps!!!)

You’ll need to use scissors to cut scrap pieces of felt. Cut a dress and 3 small flowers.

Do what Makes You Happy Side

Now it’s time to assemble everything. Using Tombow® adhesives, I adhered the different elements to the Canvas. I used MONO Multi Liquid Glue to glue small beads onto the felt flowers and set them aside to dry.

Use Tombow® Xtreme to adhere the sewn papers around the wide edges of the Canvas – leaving openings for the stamped sentiments. Also adhere the purple strips and the turquoise circle with Xtreme.

I used Tombow® Foam Tabs to layer the orange circle on the turquoise circle.

Use MONO Multi Liquid Glue to adhere the felt pieces. Use Power Tabs to adhere the pewter charm embellishments. You can cut the Power Tabs into smaller pieces to fit behind each of the charms.

Being Thankful

Walnut Hollow Crafts | Being Thankful

IMG_2219

Suzanne Cannon’s calligraphy is truly beautiful and I’m “being thankful” that she made this Set for us to use.

I used the Walnut Hollow Chippendale Plate and the Circle Thin Mini Plaque for my surface. The DecoArt Americana Chalky Finish, Vintage was perfect to enhance the colors of the wonderful Graphic 45 Botanical Tea Collection, Birds of a Feather paper. I used a large flat brush to basecoat both the Plate and the Circle with Vintage Chalky Finish. The paint is so thick and creamy, you’ll only need one coat. After the paint is thoroughly dry, lightly sand everything with fine sandpaper.

I used Tombow® Xtreme Adhesive to adhere the paper to the center of the Plate.

To die cut the scallop circles, I used Spellbinders® Classic Scallop Circles with a matching blue and ivory cardstock.

IMG_2172

Using Clearsnap® Colorbox® Mudslide with a sponge applicator, I created more of a vintage look on all of the papers as well as the plate itself.

IMG_2174

I used the same ink pad to stamp the sentiments: “Being Thankful” on the ivory paper, “for family”, “for friends”, “for blessings” and “for you” around the Plate.

To adhere the Circle Plaque to the Plate, I used Tombow® Power Tabs – they will do a great job of holding the wood plaque to the paper.

Now it’s just a matter of display – you can hang it on a wall, or place it on an easel. Either way it’s a welcome addition to any home décor. For the Fall Thanksgiving Holiday or year round.

Message Board by Judi Kauffman

My friend, Judi Kauffman, shares her talent with us to show a great idea for our new Message Board. I love her addition of cork so thumbtacks can be used to hold your notes and messages. Of course, my favorite part is that she added my name to the Board – guess I’ll get to keep this one!

Message Board 3

Supplies:

  • Walnut Hollow 10″ x 14″ Message Board 39785
  • 9″ x 11″ piece of cork tile
  • 5″ x 11″ Shimmer Sheetz in Basic Black (Elizabeth Craft Designs)
  • Americana Acrylic Paint in Ebony Black (DecoArt)
  • M-Bossabilities 2-sided embossing folder EL-008/Pattern A, Grand Calibur machine (Spellbinders Paper Arts)
  • Black border line stickers #1016, Gold upper case alphabet stickers #1251(Elizabeth Craft Designs)
  • Tim Holtz Adirondacks Alcohol Ink Pool and Metallic Mixatives Gold (Ranger Industries)
  • Double-sided adhesive sheets, enough to cover back of cork and Shimmer Sheetz (Elizabeth Craft Designs)
  • Other – Paint brush, ink applicator with felt pad, Quilters solid head extra large thumbtacks

How-to:

1. Paint Walnut Hollow 10″ x 14″ message board with Ebony Black acrylic. Allow to dry. Add a second coat to edges and back if needed.

2. Emboss 7″ at one end of Basic Black Shimmer Sheetz, turn and emboss 2.75″ of the other end.

3. Alter Shimmer Sheetz with Pool and Gold, allowing some of the Basic Black surface to remain visible.

4. Cut a piece of cork tile to 9″ x 11″, back with double-sided adhesive sheet. Attach cork to square at right side of message board. Cut a piece of double-sided adhesive sheet to 5″ x 11″ for back of embossed/altered Shimmer Sheetz. Attach to left side of message board.

Message Board 2

5. Spell out a name across the flat area of the Shimmer Sheetz. Add a piece of Black Glitter Border Line peel-off at top and bottom of the area where the name appears.

Message Board

Options:

Select a different color palette (Shimmer Sheetz comes in 21 colors and three different surface coatings), acrylic paints are available in hundreds of hues.

Choose a different embossing folder.

Spell out the name of a sports team, an inspirational word, or use numerals to record a special date.

Alter thumbtacks with the colors used to alter Shimmer Sheetz.
